What is a panic attack?

A panic attack is when the body perceives itself to be in threat. Even though there is no apparent danger to the body, it perceives itself to be in a fearful situation. It is often triggered by anxiety. Physical and mental symptoms of panic attacks then ensue, making people feel as if they are going to die.

What are the symptoms of a panic attack?

Panic attacks tend to start suddenly and can then catch people off-guard. Commonly observed signs of panic attacks include:

  • Chest pains
  • Chills
  • Cramps in the abdominal region
  • Disorientation and dizziness
  • Difficulty breathing, as if you are being suffocated or choked
  • Dry mouth
  • Fear of loss of control
  • Fear of death
  • Feeling dissociated
  • Feeling as if you are dying
  • Hot flashes
  • Nausea
  • Numbness and tingling in the extremities
  • Palpitations or racing heart
  • Shaky limbs
  • Sweat
  • Trembles
  • Urgent need to visit the toilet

How common are panic attacks?

Many people go on to have panic attacks once or twice in their lives. However, some people may develop panic disorder, which is when they start fearing the attacks too much or change their behavior to avoid a panic attack. According to research published in Elsevier, 10% of people in the UAE suffer from anxiety disorders like panic attacks. Hence, panic disorders posit a significant and grave risk.

What is panic disorder?

Differentiating between panic attacks and panic disorders is important; suffering from the former does not always mean the latter. The signs of panic disorder include:

  • Experiencing panic attacks on account of factors other than mental health problems or substance abuse
  • Frequent episodes of panic attacks
  • Fear of having a panic attack

Why do panic attacks happen?

The exact causes of panic attacks are unknown. Certain risk factors can increase the likelihood of one experiencing panic attack symptoms. These include:

Age

Adolescents and young adults are more likely to have panic attacks.

Gender

Women are twice as likely as men to get panic attacks.

Genetics

People with a family history of anxiety and panic disorders are at a higher risk.

Mental health issues

Mental health issues like PTSD, anxiety and depression can increase the likelihood of having a panic attack.

Substance abuse

People who have drug and alcohol addiction issues are also at greater risk of panic attacks.

What does a panic attack look like?

The signs of a panic attack are different for different people, which can make it harder for people to figure out if they are in real danger or if it is a panic attack. There are some common symptoms of a panic attack that include racing heart, chest pain, feeling frightened, dizziness, etc.

What does a panic attack look like in a child?

The symptoms of panic attacks in children are similar to those observed in adults. Alongside intense fear, the physical signs of panic attack accompany the attack.

What does a panic attack feel like?

In some cases, panic attacks feel like death, especially if people are experiencing it for the first time. They are frightened of what is happening to their body. Some also think that the panic attack chest pain is in fact, a heart attack. They think they are going to collapse and lose control.

What to do during a panic attack?

During the attack, the best thing to do is to ride it out. Breathe through it and continue reminding yourself you are safe. It also helps to have a mantra to redirect your focus. If you can, move to a safe space.

How long does a panic attack last?

A panic attack can last anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. The intensity of signs of panic attacks can also vary. You do not necessarily experience all the panic attack signs, but the overarching theme of feeling in danger remains the same.

How to calm down after a panic attack?

In the aftermath of a panic attack, some things can help in getting over the ‘hangover.’ These include:
  • Eating a healthy meal
  • Getting rest
  • Practicing relaxation techniques
  • Moving away from stress-inducing things
  • Exercising
  • Talking to a loved one

How to stop a panic attack?

Some things to help stop panic attacks from occurring include:

  • Catering to your mental wellbeing
  • Deep breathing
  • Exercising
  • Meditating
  • Relaxation exercises and techniques
  • Starting therapy

What to do when someone is having a panic attack?

If someone around you is having a panic attack, you should stay calm. They are not in any immediate danger, and your overreaction can be counterintuitive. If the person does not recognize the signs of a panic attack, you should:

  • Explain to them that they are having a panic attack if they do not understand it themselves.
  • Take them to a safe and quiet place.
  • Encourage them to take slow and deep breaths.
  • Distract them by asking them to count or do any activity that diverts their focus.

However, if they are aware of it being a panic attack, you should:

  • Ask them if you can be of any help and respect their decision.
  • As they might be embarrassed about their condition, do not bring it up unless they want to discuss it.

What is the difference between a panic attack and an anxiety attack?

While the symptoms of the two conditions can be similar, there are differences between anxiety attacks and panic attacks. The former is a response to a threat and is on the spectrum. It also occurs due to prolonged periods of anxiety and the symptoms also continue for longer.

Panic attacks do not necessarily need a trigger. The onset is sudden, and it also subsides after some minutes.

What are panic attack treatment options?

The treatment options for panic attacks include:

Therapy

Psychotherapy or talk therapy can help people manage their emotional health better. It is especially helpful for those suffering from anxiety.

Medication

Some antidepressants can help in decreasing the episodes of panic attacks. Similarly, some anti-anxiety medicines can also be of help. If you are trying to look for a panic attack treatment without medication, you should talk to your therapist about it.

Ayurveda

Panic attack treatment in Ayurveda does exist. It is aimed at controlling the mind, so that it is calm and relaxed. However, you should still follow the expert advice given by your therapist at Fitcy Health.

How to help someone having panic attacks?

Some things that can be of help when someone you know is having panic attacks include:

Encourage them to get help

Encourage your loved ones to get help for panic attacks. You can book them an appointment at Fitcy Health, so they can get expert aid.

Learn

It helps to know what the causes of panic attacks are, and what panic attack symptoms are so that you can understand the problem better.

Understand triggers

Some people might be triggered by situations that cause them anxiety. Helping them through these can also be effective in the management of the condition.

Offer them support

You must let your loved ones know that you will be with them, offering unconditional support.

How to get help for panic attacks?

For seeking panic attack treatment in Dubai, you should consult a mental health expert at Fitcy Health. These experts can help in managing the problem alongside addressing the cause. At Fitcy Health, you can choose from a wide range of experts. You also get treatment from the comfort of your home.
